Dusk Studies is a body of photographs made at dusk on hilltops and in open fields on the outskirts of Syracuse, NY. These are long exposure photographs: light is shown affected by time in a way impossible to see without a camera. Low light is brightened over the course of each exposure, taking on tonal qualities unseen in the dark. When photographing in dark I am conscious of the trust I place in my eyes. Seeing becomes a matter of acknowledging the dim gaps around me that my eyes won’t grasp.

I ask viewers to engage with the limitations of sight. I winnow the world down to basic visual relationships where sight falls short as a means of orientation and certainty. There is beauty in suspended certainty. This is the beauty of looking where little can be seen, locating the limits of one’s knowledge, and finding meaning in that negative space.
